16 weeks II: the morning after

and as I stepped out into the world

on this new morning

earthworms were populating the sidewalks everywhere

moving toward new habitats

and making it merely impossible to walk.

truly, it’s not just my tribe

that’s experiencing all of life these days.

so many other peoples’ folks

are moving toward new habitats

fleeing from war and poverty

but cannot arrive

and continue to risk their lives

with no safety, no hope in sight.

so many other peoples’ folks

are fighting diseases

without adequate care or assistance,

fearing they won’t make it

and no one will even notice.

and as this pandemic sweeps across these lands,

many other folks fear for their jobs, nutrition,

friends, life as they knew it.

so many even other peoples’ folks

have lived in a place like this

but don’t get to call it home

because it wasn’t their space to begin with

and at times, they don’t even get to claim

a temporary space in the streets or restaurants

or other forums of public life

without being reminded of their identity as strangers, foreigners, lessers.

other tribes suffer too these days

and we all know more about it

than we’ve ever known.

what’s there to do for me

in my cosmos

as I try to navigate my paths and possibilities,

my calls and boundaries too?

it’s never merely a question of resources.

but if we begin to ask the questions all this is truly about

we will momentarily fall out

of our stenciled lives

and would have to begin anew, entirely,

having to unlearn a lot of which

we right now think of the truth, the law

or simply the way things are.

and that’s never been a human strength now

has it.
