and it flowed and it flowed

the wide and leisurely river,

toward its only destination

as they biked on home

through the night.

they were coming from a birthday party

with friends and a bbq and drinks

and waffles and cherries and songs

on a rooftop terrace

out in the quieter parts of town.

like fireflies

their dynamos now hummed quietly

beside one another,

down the smooth bend of the river;

it gets dark there on the shore

after the sun has set.

and so the night enveloped

the dreams they wished upon

to happen to them one day.

it cradles them still

as summer’s last weeks begin.

and when the release unfolds

may they still hold hands;

for four hands can catch more

than two.
