Jazz Club Unterfahrt

Never in my life did I imagine

I’d spend a night in a Munich jazz club

in the middle of the week

with five musicians from New York City

and my sisters and friends,

listening to a jazz album ranking number two,

talking about race relations and political turnovers,

digging out those stories from back when,

listening to words like “love each other more” and

“God blessed this music”, knowing that it’s true,

sipping Spritz and hugging,

gazing around the signature-plastered walls,

taking pictures for memories.

Nights like this

fit an ocean into a whiskey bottle;

they make integrating worlds

seem possible

and turn this place into a less messy one.
